Adapted Book Type 1: Emergent Book Share
Interactive ‘reveal’ flaps are produced as velcro lift-off panels – useful for building anticipation/joint attention skills. Books include basic communication card for modelling core vocabulary and story-specific fringe vocabulary. Includes 9-item & 12-item communication card for teaching book operation (e.g. ‘lift the flap/turn the page’). Story text is larger, decluttered and set in san-serif typefaces. Suitable for early book user or emergent communicator.
Adapted Book Type 2: Early language
Story sentences are supported by picture symbols. Books include picture-word card manipulables for sentence completion activities (mainly 1 to 2 words) and communication card for modelling everyday language such as item labelling, making comments, requests and questions. A simplified version of the communication card may be included. Suitable for teaching vocabulary, modelling early language and building confidence in communication.
Adapted Book Type 3: Sentence Building
Stories typically contain repeated words, clear picture-to-word referencing and/or repeated sentences which are used for developing syntax (word order) and sentence building skills. Books include Core Vocabulary communication cards for modelling language. Some books may include book-themed picture manipulables. Suitable for building confidence in language use.
Adapted Book Type 4: Language Practice
Stories contain SVO (subject-verb-object) and other sentence types for readers to learn and practise building sentences. Suitable for readers with knowledge of AAC who enjoy using a wider variety of words to demonstrate language skills.
